Destiny 2: How to play Competitive

In destiny 2, most of the best guns in the game are acquired through a heavy grind through one of the hardest playlists of crucible. Recently I got to mythic 2 (3920 glory), and during the grind I learned some great tips to succeed.

Tip 1:

To begin, the arsenal of weapons you carry are your bread and butter. I recommend using a loadout you feel comfortable with. If your friends tell you a gun is bad, don’t instantly forget about it, the loadout you are comfortable with is the best loadout you can use. Try to use the same loadout in the crucible, and even if it is considered low-skill to use it, there is no shame in using whatever works for you.

Tip 2:

Once you have chosen a loadout, practice with it. Understanding the subclass paired with the loadout is key to supporting a team. When you practice, try practicing with friends, as getting used to their playstyle can allow you to understand what they will do, without them having to communicate it. Practicing in the “rumble” mode in the crucible playlist is a great way to get better, and focus on what you can do without a team.

Tip 3:

Playing with a team is by far, the best way to climb in competitive. If one regularly plays with the same team, they will all get better at the same rate, and never experience the inconsistency of a solo player. Never should you ever solo que, as random teammates are so unpredictable, therefore; a solo player will have to carry the team. If there is one thing to take away from the five points, this is the one. Playing with a team you know and play with often is the best way to get better and rank up in competitive.

Tip 4:

Que up to games frequently. Try your best to avoid raids, and other activities for the time you are playing competitive, as it is good to stay focussed on crucible. Try to play five or six matches without doing any other activities in between. The players I grinded competitive with agreed that staying focussed on competitive at one time made the grind way easier.

Tip 5:

In any game, callouts are crucial to team coordination, as they share information that can give  teammate a huge advantage in a fight. Skill has little to do with making useful callouts, so any player can increase their value to the team. In destiny 2 the team chat system is used rarely, and using callouts can be the difference of winning or losing. I recommend deciding certain names for places on maps, usually something short, and distinct. Make sure everyone you play with understands the different names, and mentions if a player is in super, has heavy ammo, or what gun they are using, as all these things can help them decide the best move to make next.

Throughout crucible, and especially competitive, all these points should be very helpful to new players, or players looking to get better. I haven’t seen any other person mention some of these tips, and most players think putting in hundreds of hours is key to ranking up, but especially now (during Shadowkeep) fabled is extremely easy to get to, so go out there, get that recluse, mountaintop or luna’s howl.
